thanx michelle. it was mediocre at best, but a good place to start on the way to getting it as rx’d.
look, here i am in big tx and all i can find to do with myself is post on the cfnyc cite. maybe it’s because i don’t have a life here.
i have just watched four episodes of “tila tequila: a shot at love”.
    i miss the box already
    and my dirty job :)

  • Jack Bauer

They should rename this to the “Piranha” because this workout is going to eat us alive! WTF!

  • Justin

This must be HQ way of trying to “break up” with us so they don’t have to buy us a present next week.

  • sarena

Justin, that’s the best yet! How is Leslie doing? Will she be at the party on Thurs? You two are the only ones I remember from my 1x visit to 5Points last July. I was amazed by her–you just tell her that! I thought there is no way in hell that a girl can do that crazy stuff!!

  • Dan Def

Sadly, another Crossfitter has made the ultimate sacrifice. Godspeed.

  • Kevin

My deepest respects to the family and loved ones of Navy Petty Chief Officer Mark Carter. Godspeed.
    Doing this WOD this afternoon.

  • michelle

Marisela- i missed the last episode-whom did she pick?
did you guys read the resume on the chief-unreal and was only 27! breaks your heart.

  • http://www.crossfitnyc.com Tyler Durden

    Morning WOD
Doing the math it occurred to me that this WOD can easily last an hour or more so I modified it for the morning class.
    1000m row
    95# squat cleans
    pullups
We did cleans and pullups as long as it took the person on the rower to go 1000m.
    I rowed 1000m in 3:46
I did 20 cleans while Ethan rowed
49 pullups (plus 1 after the bell)while Xuan Mai rowed.
It was a lot more fun that doing the WOD as rx’d no offense to Badger.
We might modify it differently for more people at lunch and evening classes.

  • Brendan

I love the hero WOD but damn. I mean, damn.

  • Gabe

Fair winds and following seas, Chief Petty Officer Carter. I will tackle this one as rx’d.

  • Jack Bauer

May God bless Mark Carter and his family…amen.
And once again Keith, you make lemonade out of lemons. A much better way to do it. I sometimes feel that HQ makes WODs according to their own space and needs and forget to take into account other affiliates physical constraints.

Re: Allison’s Suggestion to Post More Rowing Times
Rowed 1000 meters last night at Chelsea Piers with a time of 4:02.3 minutes. I don’t have a time for a 1000 m row from earlier in the year, but I know that this is a definite improvement from the past six months.
I find rowing just as vomitous as any of the other Crossfit benchmark WODs. That must mean I’m doing something right.

  • Brett_nyc

    Rest in Peace Mark.
    44:47 as rx’d
    I am battered.

  • xuan mai

    I’ve been a little whack-a-do this week.
    Yesterday
    Fran, 17:55.
    21 65# Thrusters/21 full pullups
Remaining thrusters 52#, Jumping ring pullups
Thankfully, after watching me struggle through the first set, Tyler dropped me down to the 52# barbell and the jumping ring pullups.
    Today:
    21 Cleans, 52#
    6 Pullups
    Row: 4:29
The bottom line is: everything is harder when you have a case of the Christmas chubbies. Since I’ve packed on a few lbs, the pullups have been getting more and more difficult.
On a positive note, I can finally kick up into a handstand by myself.

  • Brett_nyc

NC cert is sold out. I’m waitlisted. /Fingers crossed

  • Moon

The word of the day is “vomitous”. Try to use it in conversation at home or work today.
Speaking of words (and bringing this around to fitness!) one of the words that Court taught us last week, “proprioception”, stuck in my head because it was the second time I had probably ever heard that one. I am a big fan of WNYC’s “RadioLab” (think of it as a geekertainment show) and they recently did a segment on a man who, after a brief illness, completely lost his sense of proprioception. The story of how he manages was interesting to me and might be to you.
Here’s the streaming/mp3 download link to the specific section of that episode called “Where Am I?” http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/episodes/2006/05/05/segments/59024
I really recommend listening to some of their other shows, particularly “Emergence”, “Placebo”, “Morality”, “Musical Language” and “Memory and Forgetting”.

  • doug

just checked the on gmaps pedometer. and one run around the block is exactly 734 meters not including the stairs.

  • http://www.crossfitnyc.com Tyler Durden

Thanks for the update, Doug. This is the first time we have ever had an 800m run in the year that we’ve been here. So I’m glad you went to the trouble of figuring that out for us. We’ll be sure to file that information away in the unlikely event another 800m run shows up in the WOD. Keep up the good work. What would we do without you?

  • Jack Bauer

Keith when you post pictures like that, it’s no wonder when I try to get more people to come to the Box they say stuff like, “What you talking about Willis!”
You need to post pictures that get people to say “Dyno-mite!”
And if it took Brett 44 minutes to complete this WOD, I am sure we are aware of how difficult this truly is.
Who’s bringing the Christmas lights and mistletoe to the party?

  • xuan mai

Jack – why would you need mistletoe? Are you looking for excuse to plant a big one on Tyler? :)

  • http://www.crossfitwiki.com/Crossfit/Ewen Ewen

Don’t mind Tyler, Doug. His doctor just changed the dosage of piss in his Cheerios and he’s been having trouble adjusting.
Or maybe it’s the prospect of bumping into Greg under the mistletoe that’s got him all worked up.

  • http://www.allisonbojarski.blogspot.com Allison

Way to go Avery! That’s just the push I need to try to get faster at a 1k row myself.

  • sam

Not sure what you’re talking about Keith, I did a wod in October that had 800m runs and someone (probably Court) told me to basically run around the block. Which I did. Also, what about Michael (the hero wod)?
Regarding the party, how much of a party style party will it be? Will there be dimmed lights and music? Will Jeff be fooling around on the bars? Will Brian be permitted to imbibe some of the “good stuff” ? :)

  • sam

Just a minute, just realised I missed Keith’s sledgehammer sarcasm there.
In my defence, I feel like crap today. I’ve come down with a cold and am staring moodily at my monitor looking for any excuse to procrastinate/go to wholefoods for fruit.

  • marisela

    my life in big tx:
school doesn’t let out here until friday and everyone in my family is a teacher so…
after arriving at 3:30pm, i went to chilli’s for lunch. then, i came home to watch television and digest until i fell asleep at 10:30pm (michelle, the boy won. i believe bobby was his name). i woke up at 7am for about an hour at which point it dawned on me that i don’t have a car, so “doing something” was out of the question, so i fell back asleep until 11am. then i turned the television back on and am doing laundry (not my own) and watching vh1 until someone with a car comes home and i can go see my niece.
on the bright side, it’s 75 degrees here.

  • Gabe

Keith what time is the party tomorrow night? I’ll be bringing my new favorite beer, GS.

  • http://www.allisonbojarski.blogspot.com Allison

Party’s at 8pm tomorrow, guys! I’m bringing homemade chocolate chip cookies.

  • Paul S

Between Karen on Monday, my special 200 double under/200 lunge/200 push up workout last night and this, my thighs are DONE.
12:30 class for me for the first time in a while.
We did the modified version where we do as many reps as possible while one group runs/rows. I chose the run, the wonderful down the stairs/around the block/through the people/up the stairs run.
    Round 1
30 Squat Cleans, 62 Pull Ups, 3:34 run
    Round 2
22 Squat Cleans, 60 Pull Ups, 3:49 run
To finish, we had to get up to 90 reps in whichever excercises we did not do 90 and then do a run.
38 Squat Cleans, run in 4:00.

  • Dan L

    Rd 1:
22 Squat Cleans, 55 Pull Ups
    Rd 2:
26 Squat Cleans, 45 Pull Ups
Finished up the 42 squat cleans slowly as things were settling down. Can’t recall row times for the 1000m.
Also, this workout has convinced me to never again complain about too many consecutive days of sub-10 minute / lifting workouts…

  • http://www.crossfitnyc.com Tyler Durden

    SHOES!!!
Some of you placed orders with me for lifting shoes. They’re here! Bring your money and get your shoes ASAP.
    $90/pair
    Size 41:
    Jacinto
    Alex
    Brian D.
    Size 43:
    Brett
    Size 39
    ???
I don’t remember who I ordered a pair of size 7s for so if it was you, please let me know.

  • http://www.crossfitwiki.com/Crossfit/Ewen Ewen

Shouldn’t there be some size 46 shoes for me in there, or is that a separate order?
PS: I’ll be available to party prep the Box /buy stuff tomorrow afternoon.

  • AllisonNYC

65# squat cleans, kipping pull-ups, run around the freakin block
    Round 1:
    Cleans: 40
    Pull-ups: 45
    Run: 5:freakin28
    Round 2:
Cleans: 35 — started 30 seconds late because “someone” ;) reduced the weight and didn’t put it back on the bar. I had to fix it before I started
    Pull-ups: 49 in sets of 5
    RUN/walk/hell: 5:57
finished the 15 cleans at the end to make it 90.
94 total pull-ups baby and some MESSED UP hands to prove it. Lots of blood and holes in my hands.
Anyone who thinks torn callouses are cool and something to be proud of is stupid. It’s an injury. Proud of the work I did but not happy about my hands.

  • Gabe

    Badger (as rx’d)
    30 95# squatcleans
    30 pullups
    800m (its COLD out there)
    32:13
first two rounds of cleans unbroken.

  • Brett_nyc

    Strong work Gabe.

Sorry the big sizes were all sold out. You should try VS Athletics. Glenn said he has more big sizes coming in a few days…if you want to wait for them.

  • http://department.xavierhs.org/athletics/xaviertrack/schedule5.htm Brian D.

Sweet, just in time when I got my money together for Xmas shopping too! I’ll pick the shoes up tomorrow evening if I’m not still sick.

Kipping With Keith (a/k/a “keep your hands where we can see them!”)
that was my fun workout today. it began as Fran with 52# and I said-Keith jumping pullups right?
    No Michelle-do regular pullups.
But Keith-it will take me 30 minutes!
Just do it Michelle. It will be good for you.
After 14 pullups broken down like this 3, 2 and the rest SINGLES Keith offered some “motivation” that went soemthign like this:
Michelle, MOST people would think of a BETTER way to get through the rest of these pullups so it becomes easier, say like KIPPING.
well , as I was moved by the enthusiasm (or was it disdain) in his voice I cranked out two kips in a row-and with all the excitement went for a third
only to land smash down on top of the black box underneath me hitting my shin and thigh on 2 of the 4 corners of the box.
ok michelle-we are going to switch to jumping pullups now.
with the circus act included it was -13 something. it was fran’s ugly friend from down the block. but it got done whomever she was.
oh and keith had some other colcuding pearldrops of wisdom
Michelle-when you kip the idea is NOT to let go of the bar. but until you did that-the kipping looked great.

  • sarena

Michelle awesome! And told like a true warrior. Keith actually taught me WHERE my wrists are tonight–it appears that was left out of my kindergarten curicullum!!
Oh coaches all–watching the 6pm tonight was awesome. My friend Shifra loved it and really enjoyed everyone who chatted with her too!

  • marisela

michelle, i literally LOL’d. sometimes i think keith thinks we (i mean you in a whole different category than me, being that you HAVE a pull up) are just as strong as he is. OR, just as strong as kevin or tom or brett or adam or any of the other amazingly strong guys at the box.
i truly intend to get a pull up before the new year. we’ll see if the plano kids have some inspiring things for me tomorrow morning. i’ll be so happy if i get one. and moon, be prepared to pay up!!!
true what you say xuan mai. the fact that i weigh as much, or more than a lot of the guys with a lot less strength is probablly my downfall with the road to a pull up.
the texan “diet” is not helping.

  • michelle

Sarena_shouldn’t u be at home making us some paleo treats!
AllisonNYC-I was at my dermatologist today and I showe dher my callouses and I said what do u recommend and she said
    wearing gloves.
I said well they sort of wont let us and she said well
try L’Occitane’ shea butter hand creme
i said a tube of that costs more than a year membership at our gym
she wa slike WHERE EXACLTY IS THIS PLACE?
i love that corn husk oil at the box.
Moon-as per your gasping for air comment from yesterday. In the middle of my Fran disaster i stopped and told keith that if I think I now knew what inhaling abestos felt like bc i couldnt really breathe and the air felt funny and I felt like I was having an asthma attack. after the workout he tried to explain to me that it wasnt chalk or dry air-it actually came from doing thrusters fast -something about blood vessels, swallowing blood-i didnt quite get it bc i was kind of out of it but he could explain it to u-but it means you were working hard and I guess properly if you felt like you couldnt breathe at all.
or we in fact were inhaling a deadly substance and keith just didnt feel like telling us.

  • michelle

ok Allison u r making cookies-not cupcakes/ in that case i will try to get cupcakes from buttercup-its near my office and i have an office party tomorrow before the box party
any idea how many peopple we are xpecting to have ?

  • marisela

i mean my lack of strength, not the guys
    duh

  • Brendan

    Hey Everyone:
Visited crossfit pittsburgh today. They loved the Black Boxers.
    “Badger” as rx’d 26:47

  • AllisonNYC

Michelle: You’ll be kipping before you know it. It’s a process but it’s crazy how fast it happens. The most important thing is that you’re pushing yourself.
    I couldn’t kip a couple of weeks ago and I did 100 pull-ups today.
About the gloves- Someone on the MAIN SITE actually confessed that he uses gloves and that I should get a pair. I said – Yeah right. I’d never hear the end of that at the Box.
Keith said my hands come totally off the bar and change positions on every pull-up. I don;t know if that’s why my hands are such a disaster.
14 callouses and 5 were bleeding. Terrible. Washing my hair is a nightmare.

  • http://department.xavierhs.org/athletics/xaviertrack/schedule5.htm Brian D.

A2, file your calluses down a lot, that’ll prevent them from tearing up as often and use that cornhusker’s lotion to keep them from cracking. Concerning the hands coming off the bar, you mean as in you’re regripping the bar each rep or something else?

  • michelle

Marisela-I KNEW u would love that one. it was insanely humiliating but so damn hilarious .
I mean the flying right off the bar was actually one of my worst fears. and now it happened.
as was hitting myself in the face doing thrusters. that happened twice today too.
u r so in for that pullup. its just going to wait till the 31st. just to make moon sweat it out.

  • sarena

Just make sure to photograph the time when it happens Marisela at 11:59 PM on the 31st!! Moon you’re done brother…

  • http://blog.derekrose.com derek

sorry a2. i am weak and could not lift as much as you. seriously my left shoulder was just all hurty.

  • michelle

Moon-all of those words sound just a bit too much like lyrics from the award (?) winning (?) sondheim evoking , lyrically inspirational(?) musical(?) showtopper ‘REPRODUCTION”
from everyone’s favorite (?) musical (?) theatre film extravaganza “Grease 2″ (yes THAT one with Michelle Pfeiffer and Adriene Zmed)
come on u KNOW u know all those words too.

  • Kevin

Props to Gabe, Brendan, and Brett for tackling this as rx’d. Great job guys!! Now you make me want to do it as rx’d. Oh well next time. I have been away from the Black Box since Saturday and I picked a hell of a day to come back.
800m Run plus up and down the stairs and tons of pedestrians.
    Round 1
73 Pull Ups, 4:22 run, 31 Squat Cleans,
    Round 2
37 Pull Ups(Figured after I hit 90, that I didn’t really have to do more so took it easy), 4:59 run, 21 Squat Cleans
Did my final run then finished my cleans to get to 90
38 Squat Cleans( this was torture by the way. Thanks to Keith for reminding me to keep my elbows up as fatigued set in, which helped alot., run in 4:40.
My running was pathetic today. Being that I haven’t run in over 2 months, and the cold also really shocked me. Especially when you’re sweating. My throat was bothering me a little afterwards.

  • http://philanthropy.com/forums/index.php?action=profile wireless network help

I don’t think I would be able to keep up with managing a place like it! Good job and I really would love to see you keep it up.
