Black Box WOD:
(courtesy of the Northeast Regionals individual competition)
12 minutes, as many rounds as possible:
7 deadlifts (men: 275# / women: 185#)
7 handstand push-ups
14 box jumps (men: 24″ / women: 20″)
Post rounds and fractions of rounds to comments.

QUESTION: Push and pull–they’re the yin and yang of functional movement. Which are you better at? Any idea(s) why? Does pushing have a different emotional feel than pulling? (Friendly reminder: ALL READERS of this blog are encouraged to answer this question [and all questions we post], not just Black Boxers & BBBers.)

If you need to scale this WOD, I’d suggest the following:
cut the DLs down to at least 225# men / 155# women or even further to 185# men / 135# women
do some sort of HSPU progression as needed but make it challenging! (either limited ROM against the wall or full ROM with bands)
box jumps: men: 20″ / women: 14″ if needed but go for full height if you can handle. remember step-ups are not the same as jumps! better that you reduce the height if you must and JUMP all the reps but be safe and have a height that you can handle without crashing.

Pulling feels easier to me, since pushing often involves pushing something heavy overhead, requiring confidence and commitment to get under the bar and follow through. Pulling such as in deadlifting feels more secure.
I find in rock climbing I can be in a position where I have to push AND pull simultaneously using the feet and hands in opposition for stability. Being coordination-challenged I tend to forget one or more limbs at times, losing that stability.

  • Emily

hahahaha!!! lenny and i were just talking about this pic today… and wondering. what the hell was i singing? i look so much more enthusiastic than the others…..
FYI: I was not drunk. But I don’t think that defends me in any way..

  • Lenny

I was the only one who had to compete that was singing. I was not drunk just stayed out too late. Not sure if Emily was singing the same song as the rest of us. Mishik passed out UNDERNEATH his bed in his underwear. I tripped over him going to the bathroom at 430am.
    It was a fun night.

i’ve heard a couple of references to a social event at the Box this weekend – for the benefit of the newbies, can someone please point me to the details?

  • Mike Mishik

    True story.

  • Mike Mishik

I think the real question to ask is who wouldn’t sleep underneath their bed if you had a bald bearded man wearing pink underwear sleeping across the room from you?

  • Koegler (KEG-ler)

Deadlifting is my favorite lift so I’d have to say pulling exercises are my favorite. There is just something so primal about lifting heavy objects off the deck.

MK – there is a closing party for the Brooklyn Black Box.
It is a BBQ, starting at 6 and running to 9, maybe a teeny bit later. Grills provided, but bring something to put on them and something to wash it down with.

    Black Box WOD – 4 rds plus 7 DL’s, 143# bar, 2 abmats.

  • Jeff

I vote for pulling. Pulling = swimming, sailing, rowing, tug o war. I also prefer deadlifts to presses, pullups to pushups.

  • james keller

much better at pulling than pushing. my shoulder press is god awful and i cant do a full hspu but i can bang out 14 strict pullups and 300+ dl. i also like sailing (which jeff mentioned above)! my form on the dl however is lacking and i am constantly yelled at for it.

  • Lisa

As for the karaoke (drunken or not) – please tell me you guys are singing Journey.

  • Emily

    @Lisa
that was the opening song of the night, of course! we all sang as a group. and we pretty much took over the karaoke for the rest of the night. either singing rather loudly behind other people without a mic, or just blatantly taking the mics from people who couldn’t sing(apparently bulky grace pulled that one…) this needs to happen more often.

  • Lenny

I kinda like pushing because it reminds me of punching. I like pushing because I can put alot of power into a move

Emily, I knew you guys would do karaoke with style. and with bulky grace too!

1st Fran after almost a year of crossfit. PU’s felt sloppy/slow. My tongue went numb for a few minutes after I finished?
I prefer pushing – there’s something very satisfying about pushing heavy things overhead.

  • Mike K

Decided to do Grace today in BK. 3:14 – felt really slow. Most of the jerks were more like presses… couldn’t get the bar in a good rack position for some reason.
One the bright side I got 44 consecutive double unders!

  • Jai

Did the black box WOD with 103#, but my form quickly turned egregious. Got through 3 rounds plus 7 DL, 7 HSPU (all done on knees off box), and 9 box jumps (20″). So close to a 4th round!
My doc wants me to add gluten back into my diet briefly so that we can test for celiac. Anyone know the most fun thing I can eat that doesn’t also contain eggs or dairy? I’ve got to isolate it to gluten, and just decorating my next meal or two with a dusting of flour seems lame.

I downloaded Fallout 3 from http://www.games-iso.com about a week ago and, even though its a”dusty” game, its the best XBOX 360 game in my opinion ;)
