Newest UPDATE as of Apr. 30: Schedule and Programming Changes, Effective Monday, May 6

NEWEST UPDATE as of APRIL 30th:
We will add 5:50 AM and a 6:50 AM All Levels WOD’s at 5:50 AM and 6:50 AM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 28 Street (Not Wednesday).

These eight additional WOD’s are intended to fill the void created by ending Sara’s Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday Black Box WOD’s. These WOD’s are 10 minutes earlier so that we don’t have two large classes ending at the same time, creating a jam-up for the showers. Also note that we are not adding these WOD’s on Wednesday, when we run Indoor CFE WOD’s, but we are adding these WOD’s on Friday, when Sara did not have AM Black Box WOD’s.

(The 28 Street WOD’s will be capped at 18 people. During the first week, there may be more than 18, because of preregistration’s done prior to these changes.)

We are trying to handle our growth and expanded programming with the minimum impact on our members’s routines. We expect that further adjustments will be necessary, and we will make those adjustments as needed.

After a great first year of the CFNYC Team program, we have decided to expand the program to allow more of our members to participate. Starting Monday, May 6, we will increase the number of Team WOD’s from 7 per week to 23.

The Competition WOD’s will be one hour on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM (with Sara at 26 Street), at 12:30 PM (with Sara at 28 Street), and at (6:00 PM, Friday only) 7:00 PM (all four days) and 8:00 PM (except Friday) (with Avery at 28 Street). In addition, there will be 90-minute Competition WOD’s on Saturday at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 1:00 PM (with Avery at 28 Street).

By the fall, we expect to relocate all of the Competition WOD’s to the Upper West Side near Lincoln Center, where we hope to open our next location. The UWS facility we are eyeing will be significantly more drop-friendly. The Competition WOD’s will be open to the current members of the CFNYC Team and to an additional 40 to 60 of our members who can demonstrate both the ability and the desire to work at a higher level.

A number of our members have expressed an interest in more advanced programming, but also an unwillingness to commit to the restricted schedule that had been in place for the CFNYC Team. The purpose of this change is to make advanced programming available to more of our members. If the demand exists, we will consider expanding the program, and if the demand does not exist, we may contract slightly. To participate in the Competition WOD’s, members will be expected to (1) demonstrate an ability to keep up with the programming as evidenced by their performance in the 2013 Open and/or an evaluation by Coach Avery (email Avery at CrossFitNYC dot com); (2) a willingness to attend regularly an average of four Competition WOD’s per week at the time they are scheduled.

The following is a list of schedule changes that will take place on Monday, May 6:

–Sara’s Monday through Thursday Black Box WOD’s at 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM will be eliminated.

–We will add Competition WOD’s on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM with Sara on the Fourth Floor at 26 Street. (Must receive approval from Avery to attend.)

–We will add Competition WOD’s on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 12:30 PM with Sara at 28 Street. (Must receive approval from Avery to attend.)

–We will add Competition WOD’s at 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday with Avery at 28 Street. (Must receive approval from Avery to attend.)

–We will add Competition WOD’s on Friday at 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM with Avery at 28 Street. (Must receive approval from Avery to attend.)

–We will add Competition WOD’s on Saturday at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 1:00 PM with Avery at 28 Street. (Must receive approval from Avery to attend.)

–We will convert all Saturday Beginner and Black Box WOD’s to All-Levels WOD’s. (Same as Sunday.)

–We will add a Saturday All-Levels WOD at 3:30 PM.

NEW INFO as of April 23rd:
–The Monday through Friday 12:30 PM Black Box WOD will become All Levels WOD’s.

–We will add a Friday 5:00 PM Black Box WOD with Kevin at 26 Street.

–We will eliminate Kevin’s Friday 8:00 PM Black Box WOD.

How big is the UWS facility? Will the rate$ be the same? Will there be any difference in programming in the UWS vs the midtown facilities? …

    • Hari Singh

The deal is not finalized, but the space we are looking at will be a basement, comparable in size to 28 Street. The programming with be substantially the same.

The Competition WOD’s will probably be primarily on the UWS, in part because the CrossFit Open rules require that all members of an affiliate team practice together. But there should be no other reason that our members choose one location over another, other than convenience.

      • Andrew

Is 26th Street going away when the UWS opens? If most members still workout in Flatiron due to location, I can see 28th getting very crowded.

        • Hari Singh

We will be better able to determine the answer to that question when we see how many of our members choose to move to the UWS. In general, our overall goal is to maintain or reduce class sizes, while maintaining our current membership rates.

          • Andrew

            Thanks! I think that’s a great goal.

  • BenS

Will there be additional AM black box WODs at 28th St or do you expect that Sara’s current AM classes will be able to be absorbed by her new class and Kyle’s AM classes on the 3rd floor at 26th St?

    • Hari Singh

We expect to be adding additional AM classes at 28 Street starting Monday, June 3.

      • Jeff K

Don’t you think am classes will be very crowded between May 7th – June 3?

        • Hari Singh

We will be running the same number of AM classes in May, although we are not yet sure how the membership will choose to distribute itself. Once we see the extent of the interest in the Competition WOD’s, we will be better able to determine what classes need to be added in June.

But aren’t many members precluded from attending the competition classes? I guess its not clear to me what level of “cross fitter” you need to be in order to participate in the expanded competition program. Could you please elaborate on this point?

          • Hari Singh

The Competition WOD’s are suitable for advanced members, and primarily those who want to compete. The first step would be to check with one of your coaches and then talk to Avery.

Of the 40+ people who regularly attend the :45 and :00 classes, how many of us are “advanced?” Because the way I see it, a large number of us (20 per class) want the morning classes as they exist at 26 or 28th. It appears that is not a consideration. Rather, you plan on seeing how we redistribute ourselves, regardless of how convenient that may be for your members

          • Hari Singh

As part of this change, we are clearing out one of the three main quadrants at 28 Street in the AM that had been used by the Team, so that we may offer additional classes. Within a four weeks of this change, we will go from a total of four AM classes per hour to five.

Unfortunately, this may be one of those instances where we appear to be taking a step backwards. In fact, we are preparing to take two distinct steps forward, increasing the number of advanced classes and increasing the total number of classes.

        • Scott

I second Michaels comment and suggest you please try and find alternative options for all of the members you are displacing by this change immediately instead of waiting to see how things shake out. I have been attending the 7am class at CFNYC for 4 years and it is clearly one of the most well attended morning classes. Where do you expect all of these members to go? Why change something that has been in place and has worked for your members for the past 5 years? The 6:45am is already extremely busy, in addition many of us cannot make the 6:45 due to transportation schedules and the 7:15 is simply too late to then get to work on time. Please do not penalize your loyal morning members with this change and find an alternative starting May 6, not June 3.

          • NickA

I agree with Scott and Michael’s comments. The UWS location maybe convenient for some people who will want to the Comp Wods. But my guess is that a majority of the Advanced :45 and :00 regulars will still want to go to either 28th street or 26th street.

The Beg Wods on :00 and :30 are always full, every single time I’ve tried to sign up, so these are not an option for the Advanced :00′s that will be displaced.

That leaves the :45 classes as the only place for the :00s to go.

To compensate until June, I’m assuming the class size limits for these classes will be ignored?

  • http://twitter.com/msater michael saterman

I’m still confuse…Of the 60+ people who regularly attend the :45 and :00 classes , how many of us are “advanced?” Because the way I see it, a large number of us (20 per class) want the morning classes as they exist at 26 or 28th. Many of us have been going for over a year and our preferences appear not to be a consideration. Rather, you plan on seeing how we redistribute ourselves, regardless of how convenient that may be for your members.

    • Hari Singh

We will be expanding the 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM capacity at 28 Street. People will not be closed out of classes at 6:00 AM or 7:00 AM. We will add a second instructor, and we will finalize whatever additional changes need to be made. The main change for people not taking the Competition WOD’s at 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM will be that they need to move from 26 Street to 28 Street.

      • AndyK

When you say add capacity, is that in the same amount of space that each class is already allocated (1-quadrant each)? It is very tight with 20 people, and for some of the Olympic lifting WODs having 28 may be closing in on unsafe.

        • Hari Singh

We will have two quadrants available and two instructors at 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM. We may combine the class or we may not, as we determine with precision how many people are attending at these hours.

Our best guess is that of an average of 15 people who currently attend Sara’s AM WOD’s, 5 will switch to 15 minutes earlier, 5 will switch to 28 Street, and 5 will switch to the competition WOD’s.

On Friday’s attendance is down only about 20% percent, we don’t have any Black Box WOD’s at 6:00 AM or 7:00 AM, and we’re fine. It would be helpful if people would give us a bit of time to work through this.

          • http://twitter.com/msater michael saterman

oh cool. So starting may 6, who are the 2 coaches for the 6:00am and 7:00 am classes?

          • http://twitter.com/msater michael saterman

I’m curious at what is happening Monday. Nick’s 7am class tops out at 20 people and there does notappear to be a 2nd coach.

          • Hari Singh

Rather than have a large class with two instructors, we have created additional classes at 5:50 AM and 6:50 AM.
As of Thursday evening, Sofia G’s 6:50 AM class has 8 people registered, and Nick’s 7:00 AM has 19 people registered. When this settles out, the limit on all these classes will be 18.

This is explained in an addendum at the top of the post.
